The lone practice session for the ABC Supply 500 got underway at 1:50 pm. The temperature at the beginning of the session was 79F, and the track temperature was 107F. It was sunny, and the humidity was thick at 72%. The wind was out of the ESE at 8mph.
The 22 drivers and cars completed an install lap before the No. 59 Gallagher Chevrolet piloted by Conor Daly was the first driver to get on the loud pedal.
The first yellow flag of the session came out at 2:09 pm for a track inspection when reports from pit road indicated there was a cut tire.
The AMR INDYCAR Safety Team completed a full sweep of the 2.5-mile oval, and the green flag came back out at 2:16 pm.
The yellow came back out again nine-minutes later for another track inspection after reports of another cut tire.
The quickest driver at that point of the session, with a lap of 213.931mph, was Charlie Kimball in the No. 23 Tresiba Carlin Chevrolet. Power, Herta, Bourdais, Daly, Dixon, Carpenter, Ericsson, and Hunter-Reay were the rest of the top ten.
The only driver that had not turned a lap was Indianapolis 500 champion Simon Pagenaud, who was experiencing clutch issues. The Team Penske crew was hard at work, and the Frenchman was able to get back out on track when the green flag came back out at 2:32 pm
Just before the one hour mark (2:50 pm) of the session, Dale Coyne Racing rookie Santino Ferrucci went to the top of the timing screens with a lap of 215.377 mph. The rest of the top 10 at the half-way point of the 120 minutes session were: Hinchcliffe, Rosenqvist, Kimball, Power, Veach, Dixon, Newgarden, Daly and Rossi.
At 3 pm, the yellow flag came out for the third time. Once again, it was for a track inspection.
Ferrucci was still at the top of the timing screen, and most of the players from 10 minutes earlier were the same. The lone driver to move into the top ten was Matheus Leist in the No. 4 ABC Supply A.J. Foyt Racing Chevrolet.
The green flag came back out with just over 46 minutes remaining.
With 44 minutes remaining, Tony Kanaan went to the top of the timing screen, proving that his A.J. Foyt Racing teammate’s speed was legitimate.
With 30 minutes left in the session, the top-three in the championship, Newgarden, Rossi, and Power were running together. Rossi was out front, but quickly dropped behind the Team Penske drivers to see if he stacked up with the ‘Captain’s Men.’ Newgarden and Pagenaud were not interested in playing that game and came to pit road.
Drivers spent the second hour of practice in groups on longer runs to simulating race running and learn how their cars handle in traffic.
Kanaan remained upfront for the remainder of the session, with only Pagenaud and Dixon able to move up and into the top five.
