Indianapolis Motor Speedway public address announcer Bob Jenkins said Tuesday on IMS’s “Behind the Bricks” YouTube show that he plans to reduce his role during the month of May due to a battle with brain cancer.
Jenkins’ voice has been synonymous with the Greatest Spectacle in Racing for more than 40 years. His call of the closest Indianapolis 500 in history will go down in race lore and he has called the 500 on radio, TV and, for the past decade, the track’s PA system.
Jenkins’ health concerns surfaced Christmas night when he awoke with a wrenching headache. After a trip to the Crawfordsville hospital near his home for a CAT scan, he was sent elsewhere for a more in-depth MRI, which revealed two malignant tumors in his right temple.
