NIGHT RACING TO BE PART OF THE POCONO VINTAGE CELEBRATION
TQs, Slingshots, Champ Karts, Micro-Stocks and Vintage Midgets all on the program
Brodheadsville, Pa.– Following a successful debut last year, the temporary 1/5-mile oval on the front straightaway of Pocono Raceway will see the addition of lights for racing beyond dusk during the 2018 Vintage Celebration at Pocono August 17-18-19.
Presented by the Classic Racing Times in cooperation with Pocono Raceway and the Verizon Indycar Series, the Vintage Celebration brings together not only the historic Indy cars of years gone by but also encompasses vintage and modern racing on the temporary track.
Again this year the vintage and modern TQ Midgets will be part of the program, racing Saturday evening along with races for the Tobias Slingshot machines. The modern TQ Midgets will race under the “Indoor Rules” package as used during the wintertime indoor racing events. The event is being supported by the American TQ Midget Racing Association but is being conducted under an open-competition format so there is no club to join – just come and race.
The Vintage TQs will race under the auspices of the American TQ Midget Vintage Club, and full-size vintage Midgets will also be on hand for exhibition laps.
On Friday the Champ Karts and Micro-Stocks will be in competition on the 1/5-mile for the first time, along with a practice session for the modern TQs and exhibition laps for the vintage Midgets. Following practice sessions, racing begins at 5:30 PM on Friday and 7:45 PM on Saturday, times dictated by the needs of the Verizon Indycar Series in preparation for the ABC Supply 500 on Sunday.
Racing on the 1/5-mile temporary oval is just one piece of the 2018 Vintage Celebration at Pocono, which includes multiple sessions for historic Indy Cars, Champ Cars, and Sprint Cars on the 2.5-mile “Tricky Triangle,” and for the first time this year, on-track sessions for vintage stock cars as well. The infield road course will be featuring lapping sessions for historic and formula-style race cars, and the big “Sun & Show” car show will take place in the paddock area. Ray Evernham’s “Ghost” modified is scheduled to be on hand to take high-speed laps on the 2.5-mile track, and two Classic Racing Times autograph sessions will enable fans to meet personalities including 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal, Super Bowl-winning coach Dick Vermeil, and championship-winning Indycar mechanic Jim McGee.
