Lilly Diabetes Pulls Sponsorship On Conor Daly’s Car Amid Dad’s Comments 3 Decades Ago, Why That’s A Very Bad Move

It’s amazing how soft this world has become. Indianapolis Colts Radio Broadcaster Bob Lamey retired from his position last Sunday which reported later came out that he was confronted by the organization for a comment that he made a week prior to an employee using a derogatory word. It was one of those “retirement” positions but I use that term loosely.

In wake of that, Lamey issued a statement through his lawyer saying that all he was doing was repeating a story from a former driver. That former driver was Derek Daly. That led to Daly being let go from his racing duties with Indianapolis TV station WISH-TV 8.

While all of that sounded good on the surface, it ended up being handled so poorly.

First off, Daly has since lashed out against these accusations saying that he never spoke to Lamey it was actually Larry Henry and it was 33 years ago. He did admit to using the word but it wasn’t used then as a slur. It was in a phrase that was commonly used over three decades ago in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Daly, was new to the United States when he made that comment and didn’t know that the “n word” was a different meaning here.

His firing was a bad look for WISH-TV 8. They reacted quickly but didn’t do their homework. Now, Lilly Diabetes has an even worse look.

The company already sponsors Ryan Reed in the NASCAR XFINITY Series and announced in May that the would also sponsor Conor Daly, Derek’s son, in his first ever NASCAR race at Road America. Well, in his first day on track, Lilly’s pulled their sponsorship and used Derek Daly’s comments as to why.

“Our sponsorship in Saturday’s race is intended to raise awareness of treatment options and resources for people living with diabetes,” a statement read. “Unfortunately, the comments that surfaced this week by Derek Daly distract from this focus, so we have made the decision that Lilly Diabetes will no longer run the No. 6 at Road America this weekend. We remain committed to our mission of supporting people with diabetes.”

Low move by Lilly’s. They took comments made by Derek Daly from 33 years ago, one that was taken out of context and penalized his son.
