As the year comes to an end, the Motorsports Safety Education Foundation has a lot to be thankful for.
In 2016, the MSEF had their first track, Stateline Speedway (Busti, NY), mandate the MSEF Driver Safety curriculum for all their racers under the age of 18. It was a great learning experience for these young racers who admitted that they learned several things about driver safety they weren’t aware of before they took the class. Even track race operations director Tracy Magnuson took the course and shared, “I’ve been around racing for 47 years and I learned several things. The more knowledge the racer gets, the safer they will be.” MSEF president Murf McKinney commented, “It was great to see a track step up and have their racers take our online safety course covering: helmets, head and neck restraint systems, safety belt systems, and driver personal protection equipment. We have now been contacted by numerous local tracks, drag racing and oval racing, along with several sanctioning bodies about having their racers take our online driver safety course before the 2017 season.”
![]() ![]() In August, the MSEF introduced a new driver safety program, Lifesquare at the 56 th annual Knoxville Nationals.
Lifesquare is a unique user information solution that keeps personal health information with a user wherever they are and whatever they’re doing. Lifesquare information travels with the user via a cloud based, HIPAA compliant, multi-platform, patented QR code process. Lifesquare Circle lets users create a trusted network of people who are alerted in times of emergency and with whom they can share critical information or their entire health profile. This program empowers providers and consumers, smoothes transitions of care, improves outcomes, and lowers costs during personal emergencies and population disasters
The racing was incredible as always, but the response to Lifesquare was even better. Mike Long, MSEF board member and president of EMI, Inc. (Lincoln, NE), led the efforts on educating the track management, track safety personnel, and racers about Lifesquare. Long enrolled 188 racers participating in the Nationals and 36 track safety workers in Lifesquare.

Laurie Racine, CEO of Lifesquare, shared, “Lifesquare was created by a couple Ph.D. students from Stanford and the original intention was for the health care industry. The MSEF sought us out and said we are the perfect tool for the racing industry where seconds save lives. Lifesquare is learning about racing and the importance of sponsors so our QR code decals take up very little room.”

There is a yearly subscription for Lifesquare and all its benefits. The Knoxville Raceway Charitable Organization (KRCO) actually funded the $20 annual membership for every participant. Thanks to the KRCO for their commitment to the racers and track safety workers!The MSEF wrapped up the 2016 season like most the racing industry did, by attending the Performance Racing Industry Show (PRI) in Indianapolis, Indiana. The staff of PRI once again produced an incredible three-day show for the hardcore racers, with estimated attendance over 60,000.

He started his racing career working for Champion Spark Plug in various roles. From there he went to International Speedway Corporation at Talladaga Superspeedway. He then worked for Momentum a division of McCann Workgroup (now IPG). He helped build brands with some giant corporations through motorsports.
